The Causes Of Acne

No one knows what causes acne to develop. It is generally believed to be caused by a number of different factors. For example, during puberty there is an increase of androgens in the body. Androgens are hormones. If you have acne then your sebaceous glands can be overstimulated and enlarged.

This occurs in both sexes and as a result the sebaceous glands increase the production of sebum or oil.
Dead skin cells and bacteria mix with the oil, blocking pores on the skin. The bacteria then multiplies in these blocked pores leading to swelling, resulting in the formation of pimples and spots.

It is also believed that there is a hereditary factor to acne. Some believe if acne was present in your parents there is a risk that you may get it also.

Then there is the issue of stress levels. Stress does not cause acne directly but it may aggravate acne already present. When you have anxiety cortisol is produced in your body. Cortisol is a hormone that exacerbates acne.

Also some medications may be a possible cause of acne. Other things to consider are steroids or whether or not you use oily make-up or have a skin cleansing regimen that is harsh thus damaging your skin.

Eating foods that are full of grease and skin that is dirty does not directly cause acne according to available evidence. The other thing of note is that you cannot develop acne from contact with others.
